You know higher is stronger, but what does the number actually mean, and is the 30 percent really twice as good as the 15? THC, Spelled Out

THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the best known of the cannabis plant's cannabinoids, the active compounds that interact with your body. THC is the one responsible for the high, the euphoria, the relaxation, the appetite, and the shift in how you feel. THC works by binding to CB1 receptors in your brain, part of a network called the endocannabinoid system that helps regulate mood, memory, appetite, and pain. That binding is what produces the effect you feel within minutes of smoking or vaping.

What The Percentage Actually Means

When a label says 22% THC, it means roughly 22 percent of that flower's weight is THC. In a one gram pre-roll, that is about 220 milligrams of THC in the whole thing. The higher the percentage, the more THC packed into the same amount of product, and generally the stronger the experience.

Why The Biggest Number Is Not Always The Best

Here is what trips people up. A 30 percent strain is not automatically a better high than a 20 percent one. THC percentage tells you potency, not quality or the kind of effect you will get. Two things matter just as much:

• Your tolerance. If you are new or occasional, a very high THC number can be too much, leaving you anxious or couch-locked instead of relaxed.
